All the King’s Women

One of the thirty or so books I’m halfway through was dictated by Larry King (co-written by some other schlub) and offers suggestions on how to be a better talker in public situations, from speeches to cocktail parties, which I of course frequent weekly with tux in tow. King + Schlub go on and on about how important it is to listen to people and to remain curious about what they say in order to be an interesting, interested, effective and above all pleasant conversationalist. At some point, I realized that this King guy must know what he’s talking about, because he’s been married SEVEN TIMES. Proof enough.

I’m confused about whether this makes him an effective listener or an ineffective listener.

An effective listener, to the point of the woman’s accepting of his marriage proposal i.e. until he for certain gets her into the sack. Conquest achieved, he starts listening effectively to other, shapelier, younger speakers.

And there are always shapelier, younger speakers. I’m going to call my therapist now.
