Before I even got in the car to go there, Super Duper Weenie had already set the bar extremely high for itself with its hilarious and awesome name. It’s hard to say without smiling, and almost impossible to say without making you feel a little warmer inside. I was first turned on to it by a friend of a friend who’d gone to Fairfield University, Super Duper Weenie being a short drive from there. Since we’d already broken ground on road trips to Connecticut for food (the earlier one being less than a success), that this place came more highly recommended and was a much shorter drive away was, in addition to the name, all I needed to hear to want to make it stop #4.

Super Duper Weenie is right off 95 at Exit 24. It’s across the street from a Syms where we parked (shh) and is in a low-key commercial section of town. We ordered in the main part of the shop and ate at the camp-and-cafeteria style benches in the addition next door. I went ahead and got myself some root beer for the occasion. Actually, the way these things came together, the food, the drinks and the seating, made it a perfect venue to check out in the summer.

I got my usual fare of a plain hot dog and, when available, a chili cheese dog, which along with onions made “the Cincinnatian.” As you might be able to see, the dogs are cut in half and turned a little bit in the bun. This was a nice touch, as it made them a little easier to eat and brought the juices right out. The hot dogs in and of themselves were fantastic, a little bigger than most. They totally hit the spot, they weren’t too heavy, they were flavorful and phenomenal and I want more of them right now.

These toppings are more like it. The food at Bark, our previous stop, was decent but lacked some of the richness that makes for me a superior hot dog experience. Here, the chili and cheese were heartily applied, complementing the dog beneath without masking it too much. Super Duper Weenie also offers a number of hot dog topping choices. Off the record, one friend had good things to say about both the New Englander, which has sauerkraut, bacon, mustard, sweet relish and raw onion, and the Californian, with chili, chopped onion, American cheese and hot relish.

The three of us made short work of our orders, then traipsed back across to Syms for the ride back to New York. Our return to Connecticut was a success, and I was glad to hear of this place. I could easily see it becoming a mainstay on trips to Connecticut or Massachusetts, but I could also made a random weekend afternoon trip up there unprovoked. These are some of the best hot dogs I’ve had, even before the Tour, and it’ll take a serious contender to displace the one, the only Super Duper Weenie.
